Toad Talks is ARC’s virtual series featuring talks given by ARC biologists from across the country. Each talk highlights our on-the-ground and behind the scenes conservation work made possible by supporters like you, with time for live Q&A.

Our next Toad Talk will take place by Zoom Thursday, January 22, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm ET.

Tiny Turtles, Big Challenges: Bog Turtle Declines and Recovery in the Southern Appalachians
Thursday, January 22, 2026
6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Emilly Nolan, ARC Southern Appalachians Program Coordinator

Emilly Nolan, ARC Southern Appalachians Program Coordinator, will share the story of the bog turtle, one of the most threatened turtles in North America, though it wasn’t always this way. She’ll explore how prehistoric communities, ecosystem engineers, land-use changes, and modern conservation efforts have shaped the fate of this tiny turtle. Together, we’ll get into the muck to learn about bog turtle ecology, the threats they’re facing today, and the ongoing work by ARC and partners to restore habitat, boost populations, and raise awareness about this species. By the end, we’ll look at how we can better shape the future for bog turtles and the wetlands they rely on.
