Toad Talks is ARC’s virtual series featuring talks given by ARC biologists from across the country. Each talk highlights our on-the-ground and behind the scenes conservation work made possible by supporters like you, with time for live Q&A.

Our next Toad Talk will take place by Zoom Tuesday, October 7, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm ET.

Raising Larvae and Restoring Wetlands to Safeguard One of the Rarest Salamanders in the US
Tuesday, October 7, 2025
6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Nicole Dahrouge, ARC Project Coordinator

Nicole Dahrouge will share the story of the frosted flatwoods salamander, a species that once ranged across much of the Southeastern Coastal Plain, but now persists in just a few fragmented populations, most of them in the Florida Panhandle. She’ll talk about how ARC biologists crawl through dry seasonal wetlands to search for tiny, translucent egg clusters, raise the young past their most fragile stages, and return them to restored habitat. Nicole will also explain how this hands-on work, combined with habitat restoration and the start of a captive breeding program, is helping give the species a fighting chance. So far, more than 1,500 young salamanders have been released, a hopeful step forward for one of the rarest amphibians in the country.
