Toad Talks is ARC’s new virtual series featuring talks given by ARC biologists from across the country. Each talk highlights our on-the-ground and behind the scenes conservation work made possible by supporters like you, with time for live Q&A.
Our first Toad Talk will take place on Zoom Thursday, September 4, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm ET.
What It Takes to Rescue One of the World’s Most Endangered Salamanders After North Carolina’s Most Destructive Hurricane
September 4, 2025
6:00 – 7:00 pm ET
JJ Apodaca, ARC Executive Director
Executive Director JJ Apodaca will share updates from our emergency rescues of imperiled Hickory Nut Gorge green salamanders following the destruction of their habitat during Hurricane Helene. Learn what rescue teams faced as they crossed raging rivers, scrambled over giant boulders, and traversed downed trees in the shattered landscape left by the storm. Plus, JJ will share more about captive breeding efforts with the rescued salamanders in the North Carolina Zoo and how we’re continuing to protect this rare species in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, one of the most biodiverse regions of the US.
