LEADERSHIP
Nancy Karraker
NATIONAL CONSERVATION
STRATEGY DIRECTOR
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Prior to joining ARC, Nancy spent 17 years as a university professor, teaching students about reptiles, amphibians, and wetlands and conducting research on ecology and conservation in the Northeast and Southwest U.S. and in East and Southeast Asia. Her research has focused largely on the effects of forest management, wildfire, and illegal trade on amphibian and reptile populations. Throughout her career, Nancy has worked closely with federal and state agency and land trust partners to ensure that the results of her research led to land management guidance, habitat restoration, or other conservation actions, and nearly every project has had an outreach component. Nancy has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management, Master of Science in Natural Resources, and Master of Arts in English from Cal Poly Humboldt. She earned a doctorate in Conservation Biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where she studied large- and small-scale factors contributing to amphibian declines. Nancy has long attempted to embody her conservation ideals by powering herself to school and work by bike or foot, by cooking from scratch, and eliminating her use of plastics as much as possible. She is still learning.
