Julianne Pekny

DIRECTOR OF CONSERVATION AND SCIENCE

Asheville, North Carolina

jpekny@ARCProtects.org

Julianne has been fascinated by all creatures, great and small, since first witnessing sea turtles hatch on a moonlit night with her family on Topsail Island, North Carolina. Her passion to understand wildlife has guided her 14+ years of ecological research through programs spanning organismal physiology and animal behavior to global patterns of biodiversity. Most recently, Julianne completed her PhD in Ecology with an emphasis in Conservation Ecology from the University of California, Davis. There, she studied relationships among environmental conditions, amphibian reproductive timing, and garter snake foraging behavior at high-elevation lakes across Lassen Volcanic National Park, California. Now, as Director of Conservation and Science, Julianne aims to leverage these experiences to advance our understanding of the challenges facing North American reptiles and amphibians and inform conservation management and policy. When Julianne isn’t crunching the numbers in her office, you can probably find her hiking with her pet poodle, Zoey, or starting yet another project in her garden.
